Tips & Guidelines

These tips are intended to help keep the Pernese Online lists contain standard entries in order to make them easily readable and to conserve space. Please read them and refer to them when making your entries. We believe they will help serve the common good.

  Which characters should you list?

List only PC characters. Please leave NPCs off the list. If your NPCs are so important to you that you are dying to list them then why are they still NPCs?

How many characters should you list?

You can add as many as you like, however, please be reasonable. If you have 80 characters and you list them ALL, no one's going to take the time to read your entire entry. If you have a lot of characters, list only your favorites or the most important.

How should you fill out a new personal entry?

First & Middle Names: Please enter your real name. We will remove entries from the database if they don't contain names that we deem likely to be actual names. You may abbreviate if you'd feel more comfortable being known by your first initial.

Last Name: You may abbreviate if you don't feel comfortable listing your full last name, however, if you abbreviate your last name, please don't abbreviate your first name.

Former Name: If you've never used another name while in Pern fandom, just leave this blank.

Email Address: This is what you will use for your login name on Pernese Online, and the address at which we could contact you if need be. We do not give out email addresses except as viewable on the site. We don't send spam, though we may, if we deem it necessary, include you if we need to mail out really essential site news.

This is also the address to which your password will be sent if you lose it. Enter an address only you use.

Pernese Online Password: Please don't make this guessable. It should be at least 7 chracters long and contain more than lower case letters. It should not be your name or the name of any character listed on Pernese Online.

City, State, Country: You may, of course, be vague if you'd feel more comfortable that way.

How should you fill out the new character form?

To add a club to your listing, click on "Add a new club & character" at the bottom of the Manage Clubs & Characters page. You MUST add a character in order to add a club.

Select a club to add: Find your club on the list. Be careful, as some clubs have similar names. If your club isn't listed, contact the Archives of Pern, from which Pernese Online gets its list.

How should you fill out the new character form?

Note that you shouldn't add a comma or period at the end of any field in your character listing.

Character's Name: The character's current name. Don't include former names.

Rank, title or position: You must add someting to this field. If they don't have an official rank, add the closest thing. For example, if the character just lives at a cot, you might enter "Cotholder".

Be sure to capitalize correctly, because this will appear as a title:
Cotholder Oradette not No rank Oradette

Don't use excessively long titles or ranks, and abbreviate where possible:
Sr. J. StarSmith Izlara not Senior Journeyman StarSmith Izlara.

Don't put a comma after your rank.

Don't list former ranks.

Don't list a dragonrider's Wing.

Don't list your Weyrling's class number or graduation date.

Location:

List the location only if the character is not located at the Weyr the club its named after. You can leave this field blank. Don't list a location for your Crafthall unless your club has more than one Hall for that craft. Just list the Crafthall:
Harpercraft Hall not Harpercraft Hall at Fort Hold

  Dragon's color and name:

If the character doesn't have a dragon, leave this blanke.

List ONLY the dragon's color and name in the format:
    brown Fuseth not Fuseth (brown)

If the dragon is deceased, you may add that info to this line:
    brown Fuseth (dec.)

You may capitalize dragon colors if you wish. Just be consistant.

How should you edit your personal information?

Changing your user profile

You may edit most information about yourself by going to the View & Edit User Profile screen. Name, Former name, Email (login), Location are all as discussed below.

The "Publically Viewable" field an be used to hide your entry if you decide that you don't wish to have it publically displayed for some reason or another. "Yes" means that your profile and character lists are viewable on the pages.

The "Added" and "Last Edited" fields are created automatically by the program. "Added" is the date you first entered your information into the Pernese Online database. This is the date displayed as your "Last updated" date on the Pernese Online public lists if you've never made an update.

The "Last Edited" date is the date you made the most recent change to your characters or profile. This date is updated whenever you make a change. This is the date displayed as your "Last upated" date on the Pernese Online public lists, unless you have never made an update.

  Changing your password

You may change your password at any time by logging in and clicking on "Change Password". For security reasons, you will be asked to enter your login and current password before you can set a new password.

  Changing your login name

Your login name will be changed if your email address is changed.
